Moanin is a grade four jazz piece by Charles Mingus. This piece is difficult because each part has to connect properly. The bass line has to keep pushing the tempo forward or the melody will slow down. Some parts lead into another section’s part. Everybody has to make sure they are counting and come in right when they are supposed to. This piece uses a high octave which can be difficult for brass players to play all the high notes. This piece features the saxophone section in the middle which can be hard to play in unison.
